    Star to Delta Starter

    Abstract

In automatic star delta starter, all that the operator has to do to stat the motor is to momentarily press the ‘start’ button. The motor automatically starts in star changes over to Delta after a definite time interval. If the change over from star to delta is made prematurely, current will shoot up. In this starter it is avoided by providing a timing relay. Hence this is the advantage over manual type. An induction motor can be brought to rest quickly by the dynamic braking principle if during operation; the power supply to the stator winding is changed from A.C to D.C. The stator winding then develops a stationary magnetic field and the rotor conductors as they are short circuited. The kinetic energy of rotation is then dissipated as copper loss and the motor stops quickly. A rectifier converts AC into DC for dynamic braking purpose.
