    Modern Railway System

    Abstract

In recent years, the range of sensing technologies has expanded rapidly, whereas sensor devices have become cheaper. This has led to a rapid expansion in condition monitoring of systems, structures, vehicles using sensors which reduces human inspection requirements. Key factors are the advances in networking technologies coupled with the technology to integrate devices. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) can be used for monitoring the railway infrastructure such as bridges, rail tracks, and track equipment along with vehicle health monitoring such as chassis, bogies, wheels, and wagons. Sensor based condition monitoring in railway industry is proposed. Sensors are used for the purpose of automatic closing of railway gates, crack detection in rail tracks, obstacles in the track, changing of railway track, used to avoid collision due to two trains on the same track. By employing the automatic railway gate control at the level crossing, the gate is closed automatically whenever the train comes and gate is opened after the train leaves the level crossing. A rail track switching system has been designed to control railway track controlling devices including railway switches and signals within a given area from a single point. Obstacles and crack should be detected to avoid collisions.
