    Universal Smart Card Management

    Abstract

A Smart Card is like a piece of plastic. It is of the same size like credit or debit card. It is embedded on a silicon chip. The chip consists of a microprocessor, which is a miniature computer. This can perform calculations and store data or information in its memory. These chips hold a variety of data from stored information to secure information. It has applications which support operations like medical/health care records. New application or information can be updated added depending on the chip memory. Anna University, has introduced chip-based University Multi Purpose Smart Card System (UMPSC) for the use of staff and students of the University. The Smart Card System stores all the personal data of the students and staff in its integrated database. It encompasses an efficient Library Management System with advanced RFID automation modules and updated security protocol. The entire UMPSC System is administered by the Centre for Professional Development Education. The receipts and expenditure pertaining to Smart Card System are invariable included in the Budget Estimates of the CPDE. The CPDE is in charge of the entire Smart Card System in the University. The day-to-day activities like purchasing and issuing of smart cards, maintaining accounts and files are done by this Centre. The smart card system is guided by Implementation and Monitoring Committee constituted by the Vice-Chancellor.

    Existing System

In our existing system, not tamper proof. It can be lost/stolen lack of user mobility – only possible if user has smart card reader every he goes. Has to use the same reader technology can be expensive. Working from PC – software based token will be better. No benefits to using a token on multiple PCs to using a smart card. Still working on bugs.

    Proposed System

The main advantages of using smart cards are that the chip is tamper resistant therefore the data stored on the chip is safe. The information on the card can be pin protected or read write protected therefore no one can change the information and sharing of information is also restricted. Data encryption can be performed for exchanging data more securely. Information can itself be processed using smart cards. Updating of information and application can be easily made.
