This project is developed for the user to use a digital tachometer using LCD display. It mainly consists of IR Transducer, Microcontroller unit and LCD display. The IR transducer consists of a IR LED and a Photo diode. This pair is connected with a speed sensor (disc mounted with hole) and the whole arrangement is connected with the motor. When the motor rotates, the disk is rotated. When one cycle is completed, the photo diode receives IR signal from the transmitter through the hole in the disc. The receiver sends signal to the Input port of the microcontroller and the microcontroller counts the number of rotations per minute (RPM) and accordingly it sends signal to the LCD display. The LCD display displays the speed of the motor. This device is cost effective, portable and easy to use.
