In this era of technology, smartphones acts as a companion to people all over the world. It provides numerous benefits to its users. Smartphones can solve most of the problems quickly and easily. It can be used within the academic institution to manage student’s attendance. From the olden times, in every college, student’s attendance is taken manually using paper and pen. There are different methods to maintain attendance such as biometrics. This paper aims to develop the android based attendance system for students using QR code and fingerprint feature. A decoding algorithm is used to verify QR code and a fingerprint extraction and matching techniques is used to verify fingerprint. This system mainly reduces time for taking attendance and saves the lecturing time.
The existing system handle the problem for recording the attendance by using two applications, one for generating the QR Code by entering the student details and second application for taking the attendance and generating the attendance in CSV or XLS format. The teacher will need to scan the QR code of the particular student in order to confirm their attendance. This paper discusses how the system verifies student identity to eliminate false registrations. The system deals with the management and evaluation of attendance of all students. The student QR code will be provided to professor for taking their attendance. The professor handling the subjects is responsible to mark the attendance for all students of the group or class. The attendance will be marked as 0 and 1, 0 for absent and 1 for present in the database of the particular student row in the table. The student attendance reports will be generated in CSV and XLS sheet for further use.
To overcome the drawbacks of the existing system, we proposed a new system in android domain namely “Android-based attendance system using QR code and fingerprint features”. Android domain is chosen since it is more prevalent than any other handheld operating systems. This system introduces an automatic attendance management system which integrates fingerprint authentication into the process of attendance management using QR code. Since each and every person, including twins have unique fingerprint, it can be used to take attendance. It will avoid fake attendance and save lecture time. In this system, the biometrics of the user is captured and the minutiae data are extracted and stored in a database along with the student’s details. The faculty scan unique QR code of every student and students make fingerprint authentication and fingerprint is verified and the attendance is updated in the database. The database can be queried for overall attendance report of the students. The defaulters list of students who have less than 75% of attendance will be generated every month which may alert students about their attendance status. A notification SMS/mail also will be sent to their respective mobile number.
