ROBUST LOW-COST PASSIVE UHF RFID BASED SMART SHOPPING TROLLEY

    Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) is changing human lives by connecting everyday objects together. For example, in a grocery store, all items can be connected with each other, forming a smart shopping system. In smart shopping system an inexpensive RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tag is attached to each and every product. The customers are provided with a smart shopping cart, when the customer places the product into the cart the product details such as price, count, etc., can be automatically read by the RFID which is attached to the smart shopping cart. At a result, the billing is carried out by the micro controller in the cart itself and it can be viewed through the LCD Display in the cart. The Product details (count, amount, etc.,) are transferred to the PC Billing system through Zigbee connection thereby preventing the customers from waiting in a long queue at checkout of the shop. Incase user want to pay through online using their credit/debit card they just insert their pin through keypad for fast process. Another benefit of this kind of system is that inventory management becomes much easier, as all items can be automatically read by an RFID instead of manually scanned by a labour. Thus smart shopping system reduces the manual work and saves time for customers.

    Existing System

In the existing method customer will do the shopping with NFC enabled mobile phone. The customer should scan the products which he wants to purchase by tapping the mobile phone on NFC card attached to the product. The connection will be established with the database of the shop and the information related to the product will get displayed on the application customer is able to do payment through his mobile phone.

    Proposed System

The proposed system consists of RF transmitter, receiver, Arduino microcontroller, Wi-Fi. So each trolley will send the item information to the main billing server for calculating the final bill of purchased items. To send information of each trolley we are using Zigbee as it has some advantages over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Working is started when the customer enters to the supermarket and takes the trolley. The RF receiver in the trolley is paired to Zigbee and LCD for bill generation. When the customer puts the items the RF receiver reads the data from the RF transmitter which is attached on the product, then it is send to the Zigbee through the microcontroller. By using Zigbee this data is get sent to main server for fetching cost of the item, so that cost details are displayed on the LCD attached to the trolley. If the customer wants to remove the item from the trolley, then cost of that item gets subtracted from the total bill during the process. At last the bill gets calculated in the main server. The keypad is also paired with the trolley to complete the payment for the purchased products. This sets the purchase in ease. It becomes easy for the store to do inventory management as all items can be automatically read and easily managed on to.
