    Student Information System

    Abstract

Student Information System (SIS) is a management information system for education establishments to manage student data. Student information system provide capabilities of registering students in courses, documenting grading, transcripts, result of student tests and other assessment scores, building student schedules, tracking student attendance and managing many other student related data needs in an institution. A SIS should not be confused with a learning management system or virtual learning environment, where course materials, assignments and assessment tests can be published electronically. These system vary in size, scope and capability from packages that are implemented in relatively small organizations to cover student’s records alone, to enterprise wide solutions that aim to cover most aspects of running large multi-campus organizations and their online schools with significant local responsibility. It is mainly useful for educational establishments to manage student data which also facilitates all individual associated information for easier navigation on daily basis. It provides capabilities for entering student test and other assessment scores, building student schedules, tracking student attendance and managing many other student-related data needs in a college. Our easy-to-use, integrated college administration application would be used to reduce time spent on administrative tasks, as to concentrate on other skilful practical activities other than book worming. It can accept, process and generate reports at any given point of time accurately.

    Existing System

In the existing system all the processes are done in a manual way. The institution admin needs to collect the data of the students and needs to store the data in a manual way. In the existing system all the process are based on paper work. The earlier system in college used only paper records for this initiative. While paper records are a traditional way of managing student data there are several disadvantages to this method. It takes a very long time to convey the information to the student. Paper records are tedious to manage and track. This system provides a simple interface for the maintenance of student information and examination scores. Large amount of paper work is needed to accomplish the task in the current system and more time is needed to perpetuate necessary record. This system is used far and wide and it requires lot of human efforts and interaction is needed to maintain the records. It is very difficult to get the information about the old students who left the college more than ten years. There is a chance of data loss in case of any physical damage is encountered or in case of any natural disaster. It is decentralised and asymmetric way of storing the data.

    Proposed System

Current system has encountered with many limitations. The suggested system hits the restrictions found in the current system. There exists lot of advantages in a proposed system that is the system is complete package so there is no slipups concerning the statistics of student’s attendance and internal assessment marks etc. Also it eliminates redundancy. It is easy to get information from single source. No latency when bringing back statistics and status of the student. The system under consideration is prepared in order to replace the current paper record system with an automated online information management system. Admin add the student details such as name, email, DOB, gender, course details, fee details etc., in the application. Admin can directly access all facets of a student’s academic progress through a secure, online interface embedded in the college’s website. The system employs user authentication, displaying only information necessary for an individual’s duties. In addition to this, each sub-system has authentication allowing authorized users to create or update information in that subsystem. All data is stored discretely on SQL Servers that are managed by the college administrator and ensures highest possible level of protection. The system features a logging system to track all user access and ensure conformity to data access guidelines thus expecting to increase the efficiency of the college’s record management thereby reducing the time needed to access and deliver student records to users.
